I am privileged to work at the Singapore National Eye Centre. It gives me access to advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment, contemporary techniques and—most importantly—the company of brilliant colleagues whose expertise spans the breadth of ophthalmology.
Modern ophthalmology is too broad for any one doctor to maintain subspecialist-level expertise in every area. This is why many of the world's leading eye centres are large academic institutions built around multiple subspecialties.
When an eye problem is complex or crosses traditional boundaries, an academic centre can involve the appropriate specialists, discuss difficult decisions and coordinate care across teams.
SNEC provides care to more than half of Singapore's public-sector eye patients. Its main campus is at Outram, with SNEC eye clinics at Bedok, Changi General Hospital and Sengkang General Hospital.
Appointments at SNEC are provided through subsidised and private care pathways. Both are supported by its wider academic and subspecialty network and provide a high standard of care. The principal differences are the ability to request a named ophthalmologist and how clinicians-in-training participate in the patient's care.
01Subsidised care
High-standard care, delivered as a team.
Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents referred through an eligible route may receive subsidised specialist outpatient care.
Common referral routes include polyclinics and CHAS GP clinics, and the referral must be non-named.
Subsidised patients receive a high standard of team-based care under the supervision of a senior doctor.
Clinicians-in-training may participate in consultations and treatment—including laser procedures and surgery—as members of that supervised team.
The doctor caring for you may change from one visit to another.
You cannot choose a specific doctor or surgeon under the subsidised pathway.
02Private care
Request a named ophthalmologist whose practice fits your needs.
Patients may request a named ophthalmologist whose practice focus and clinical interests suit their needs.
The named ophthalmologist leads and remains responsible for their care.
Because ophthalmology contains many subspecialties, no individual ophthalmologist covers every area with the same depth of expertise.
SNEC's doctor directory allows patients to identify an ophthalmologist whose clinical interests match their condition.
I am unable to personally make or change appointments for patients. SNEC has a dedicated official pathway for appointment requests, changes and enquiries.
